There’s a single corn stalk growing in our garden out of nowhere.

Today it reminded me of something i noticed as a kid.

Every year we planted corn in our garden. The more tightly we planted, the thinner the stalks seemed to grow. But every once in a while, one would grow on its own, away from the rest. Those were always thicker, stronger, and sturdier.

When autumn came and the strong winds arrived, most of the corn would end up on the ground.

The lone stalks were usually the ones still standing.

Same with people.
